Identifiable Blu-ray Unit Sales for the Week Ended Estimates of Blu-ray units sold by title by two methods: BD#Index is the estimate of units sold per title based on the index numbers on the Blu-ray Disc Top 20 chart. Each title units are estimated based on its Index number as a percentage to the #1 bestselling Blu-ray title. BD#BD% is the estimate of units sold per title based on the Blu-ray marketshare off the Top 20 Sellers chart or the BD Title Share chart computed against the DVD units sales per title reported each week on the-numbers.com US DVD Sales Chart. Alright, there's quite a bit to go over this week in DVD Sales. First off, I spoke with Bruce Nash of The-Numbers, who is an amazing analyst that works hard to put together the DVD Sales Chart each week. I use his figures, and I never want anyone to forget about the hard work that he does. I spoke to him because of a discrepancy in the DVD Sales Chart for the week that ended November 15th, when Up topped the charts. He told me that there was an error in The Numbers' calculations, and the chart was re-posted with different numbers that had originally been reported. I've posted the revised Nov. 15th chart at the bottom of this post. Also, the holidays caused a major delay with last week's chart, for the week ending November 22nd, when Star Trek was the top seller. Thus, we're still a week behind, and while I'm trying to sort out all the confusion, I'm going to have to skip my DVD Sales Notes and just give you the two charts. Obviously, this invalidates last week's Blu-Ray Sales Chart as well, so I'll maybe modify that, or maybe restart from scratch. I'll keep you posted on this week's chart, but check out the two accurate ones below: |

Great job. I look forward to seeing it each week. Its the same method as my calculation for the top 20 units. One question, I assume you are using the one calculation for the #1 bestselling Blu-ray title and then extending it down from the Top 20 Blu-ray Disc chart? Since Wal-Mart does not participate in the Nielsen Videoscan first alert database and it is included in The-Numbers.com estimate, this method will tend to overestimate the sell through sales direct to consumers a bit since Wal-Mart proportionally sells more DVDs and less Blu-ray as a percentage at the moment. But its getting closer and any overages these calculations would bring are probably equal to the studio inclusion of rental outlets sales and other non tracked outlets. Once again though even if the magnitude is off the trends and relative measures between the title each week and over time would be accurate. Besides it the best data we routinely have each week. Good job. |

Joe" and it's now the third biggest "first week" seller of 2009. After a rather boring 9-month period of low sales finally there's a light at the end of the tunnel. The sales of the #1 titles for the last 5 consecutive weeks are in excess of 2 million. In fact the last #1 title that sold less than 1 million in its first week was "The Office 5" on 13 September 2009. "Monsters Inc" re-enters the chart at #6. It was originally a #1 hit in 2002. It sold 7 million in its debut week, which was a record at the time (to put it another way: it had a bigger first week than Harry Potter and Lord Of The Rings that year). Six out of the ten best selling DVDs this week are animated movies. "The Ugly Truth" opens at #2 with 805.000 units. It's the biggest hit for the beautiful Katherine Heigl since "27 Dresses" hit #1 in May 2008. It's also the biggest hit for Gerard Butler since "P.S. I Love You" which ironically displaced Heigl's DVD at the number one position in June 2008. Like I said, DVD sales are on a roll. "Star Trek" opens next week and get ready for another huge first week opener.
