New Moon’ Takes Bite Out of Sales

The Twilight Saga: New Moon

It was “Twilight” time at retail, again. The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the nearly $300 million-grossing sequel to last year’s blockbuster teen vampire movie Twilight, sold more than 4 million copies its first weekend in stores to easily capture the top spot on the national DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales charts.

The sequel, released on Friday night, even outsold the original at the outset, which moved 3.8 million units its first weekend in March 2009.

“Twilight” mania sent the original film back into the top 20 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert overall sales chart, where it came in at No. 16, as well as the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc sales chart, where it debuted at No. 11.

The original Twilight went on to become the top-selling home entertainment release of 2009, with 9.2 million units sold, according to Summit Entertainment, the independent behind the franchise.

In spite of high sales demand, The Twilight Saga: New Moon debuted at No. 2 on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week ending March 21, behind Did You hear About the Morgans?, which made less than $30 million in theaters but nevertheless bowed at No. 1. The Sony Pictures comedy bowed at No. 9 on First Alert.

A third theatrical new release, Walt Disney Studios’ The Princess and the Frog, rode its $104.3 million box office gross to a No. 2 debut on both sales charts.

Nielsen research shows that 17% of the weekend sales tally for New Moon came from the Blu-ray Disc, while Princess generated 22% of its first-week sales from Blu-ray.

Three other new theatrical releases also posted strong sales and rentals. Warner’s Ninja Assassin ($38.1 million box office) debuted at No. 3 on both First Alert and the Blu-ray Disc sales chart. Summit’s Astro Boy ($19.6 million) bowed at No. 7 on First Alert and No. 9 on the Blu-ray Disc chart. And The Fourth Kind ($25.5 million), a horror release from Universal Studios, debuted as the week’s No. 4 rental.

Blu-ray Sales, March 15-21: New Moon Shines

Posted March 25, 2010 05:26 AM by Juan Calonge

The Twilight Saga: New Moon was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended March 21, according to Nielsen VideoScan. Despite the "female-driven nature of the franchise" (to quote Summit's home entertainment president Steve Nickerson), 17% of the 4 million-plus units sold of New Moon came from the BD edition, while the first installment, Twilight, had only managed a 3% BD share last year, even though retailer exclusives probably played a role then as well.
