Couples Retreat

Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s Couples Retreat, the latest Vince Vaughn comedy, became the second new release in as many weeks to top all three national home video charts its first week in stores. The film came to DVD and Blu-ray Disc the Tuesday before Valentine’s Day after earning $109.2 million in theaters.

Sony Pictures’ Zombieland, the previous week’s triple-play winner, slipped to No. 3 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart as well as Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week ended Feb. 14. Coming in at No. 2 on both charts: Warner’s The Time Traveler’s Wife, which grossed $68.4 million in theaters and, like Couples Retreat, is a new release.

On the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc chart, Zombieland slid to No. 2, with Time Traveler’s Wife debuting at No. 3.

Two other theatrical features bowed on DVD and Blu-ray Disc during the week. The Stepfather, a gruesome Sony Pictures remake about a murderous stepfather that generated $29 million in big-screen revenue, bowed at No. 6 on First Alert and No. 4 on the Home Media Magazine rental chart. And Universal Studios’ A Serious Man, a comedy that made just $9.2 million, debuted at No. 14 on both the sales and the rental chart.

Couples Retreat generated nearly 20% of its unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, a significant percentage that indicates the high-definition disc format is now well beyond the early adopter phase.

Zombieland in its second week in stores generated 27% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, down slightly from 31% of its first-week sales.
