‘Law Abiding Citizen’ Lays Down the Law Law Abiding Citizen By : Thomas K. Arnold | Posted: 24 Feb 2010 tarnold@questex.com In a stunning triumph for an independent, Anchor Bay Entertainment scored a triple-win shutout on the national home video charts for the week ended Feb. 21, with Overture Films’ crime drama Law Abiding Citizen debuting at No. 1 on all three charts. The film, which stars Jamie Foxx and grossed a respectable $73.4 million in theaters, bumped Universal Studios’ Couples Retreat from the top spot on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, the Home Media Magazine rental chart and the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc chart. On the sales chart, Couples Retreat slipped to No. 4 its second week in stores, behind two veteran releases, including Walt Disney Studios’ Up, which shot back up to No. 2 from No. 7, and Warner’s The Hangover, which rose to No. 3 from No. 5. Both films have been heavily promoted, and discounted, at retail since their respective big wins at the Golden Globes and a subsequent best picture Oscar nom for Up. Rental demand remained high for Couples Retreat, which was No. 2 on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, with about 56% as many rental transactions as Law Abiding Citizen. The Vince Vaughn comedy slipped to No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, selling just 14% as many copies as top-ranked Law Abiding Citizen. Halo: Legends, from Warner, was No. 2, with 23% as many unit sales as Anchor Bay release. Law Abiding Citizen generated 28% of its first-week sales from the Blu-ray Disc version, according to Nielsen research. |
