Report for week ending 3/14/10

‘Precious’ Lands at No. 1

Precious

Three high-profile theatricals made it to home video March 9, and two of them wound up as the top DVD and Blu-ray Disc sellers the week ended March 14.

Lionsgate’s Precious, the double-Oscar winner about an overweight, illiterate Harlem teen who turns her life around, debuted at No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, meanwhile, debuted at No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc chart — and bowed at No. 2 on the overall chart, selling just 18% fewer units than Precious.

That’s a remarkable showing, given that the film grossed only $10.3 million in theaters. But fueled by an ardent fan base, the sequel far outpaced its expected week-one sales — performing like a film with a theatrical gross of between $50 million and $80 million.

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart, neither title could nudge Sony Pictures’ 2012 from the top spot. The blockbuster disaster movie easily held on to the No. 1 position, with rental demand down just 22% from the previous week.

Precious debuted at No. 3 on the rental chart, behind the Paramount drama Up in the Air, while Boondock bowed at No. 8.

Also new in stores was Walt Disney Studios’ Old Dogs, which debuted at No. 3 on the sales chart and No. 10 on the rental chart.
