'Alvin,' 'Sherlock' split video charts

Sequel topped sales; Downey Jr. starrer was No. 1 rental

By Thomas K. Arnold

"Sherlock Holmes"

It was a split decision on the national home video charts last week.

"Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" easily topped the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart for the week ending April 4, while Warner's "Sherlock Holmes" captured the top spot on Home Media Magazine's rental chart.

Both films came to DVD and Blu-ray Disc with similar box office performances. "Alvin" grossed $219.3 million, while "Sherlock" took in $208.7 million.

"Sherlock" debuted at No. 2 on the sales chart, although it sold just 66% as many discs as "Alvin." "Alvin" bowed at No. 3 on the rental chart, behind the previous week's top-ranked "The Blind Side," with 50% as many rental transactions as "Sherlock."

The outcome on the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc chart, meanwhile, was elementary: "Sherlock" finished on top, with 34% of its total first-week sales coming from Blu-ray Disc. "Alvin" finished a distant No. 2, selling just 34% as many high-definition discs as "Sherlock." Of total "Alvin" disc sales, Blu-ray Disc accounted for just 8%.

Walt Disney Studios' new two-disc "Un-Anniversary Edition" of the original 1951 "Alice in Wonderland," released a year before its 50th anniversary to capitalize on the theatrical success of the new live-action "Alice," debuted at No. 6 on the First Alert sales chart.
